Yeah, we don't either, but Sofia Vergara's coveted figure – in rebellion to the stick-thin look – emulates the 1950s pin-up girl. The actress, who plays an outspoken mother on Modern Family, embraces her womanly look and has openly joked about her incessant sweet tooth, hate for exercise, and having food shipped to her home.
Vergara's health regime serves as a reminder that sometimes, indulging in life's (sometimes unhealthy) pleasures can be more gratifying than flaunting a skinny body after hours in the gym. With that said, she does workout occasionally and tries to swap her high-calorie favorite grub for healthier alternatives. She said in an interview with Shape: "I am not very obsessed with dieting and working out, but I always do it. I try to do everything in moderation."
Diet: Vergara isn't one to whip up vegan chocolate chip cookies or a giant plate of pasta and meatballs. In fact, she doesn't like to cook at all. She chooses the easier route – literally – by having food sent to her home. "I always have these Colombian things shipped to me, arepas," she told ABCNews.com. "You can put anything on top of them – cheese, meat, butter, salt. I always have them in my refrigerator and when I really want to feed myself I go for them."The woman who's become known for portraying the exotic, free-spirited role of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett isn't super strict with her diet. When she has to slip on a tight gown for big events, though, she sets some rules for herself. "When I really want to be good and control myself, I have lollipops in my handbag — instead of having a tiramisu, I have a boring lollipop," she told Self in 2010.
Since Vergara says she's "addicted to sugar!" she uses some very particular tactics to reverse her cravings. "After dinner I will eat anything, even just a square of sugar," she told People. A cube of sugar is some seriously concentrated sweetness, so it must do the trick. She also likes to fall back on the lollipop option because "it's better than ordering tiramisu," she explained.
She Actually Despises Exercise – But Still Does It: It's hard to say if Vergara is more averse to diet or exercise. Just like she pushes herself to fight her junk-food tendencies, she also works to fight her tendency to not hit the gym. "I hate to work out. I get in a bad mood when I have to do it!" she told Self. As she approaches the big 40-year-old mark, though, she's extra motivated since her body doesn't bounce back so quickly. The Colombian lady turns to Latin dancing for a spiced-up workout – which she finds way more fun than classic exercise.
When all else fails, Vergara stays motivated by her urge to look good for her TV character. "Nobody wants to see Gloria with a flat a$$!" she's joked.Vergara's Cool With Being Voluptuous: It's hard to envision, but Vergara says she was a total string-bean as a child. "They called me palillo," she told Shape. "Which means toothpick in Spanish." Vergara remembers blossoming (what seemed like) overnight and telling her mom she was going to cut off her breasts when she turned 18.
Vergara can more easily evade size-0 pressures because her character is written for a voluptuous woman. "People expect... a woman to be a little more voluptuous. So they don't expect [her] to be really thin. They want to see Gloria like a voluptuous woman," she explained.
While Vergara's well-endowed chest tends to get the most attention from admirers, her favorite asset is a much more subtle physical trait: her eyes. "They have a natural cat's-eye shape, so I try to play that up," she said. And sometimes, we think it's completely fine to focus on a more understated part of your body...even if everyone's still fixating on your enviable curves.
